Cure From the Cupboard

tea with mint

I got these information from FOOD Magazine, on their September 1999 issue which I would like to share with readers of my blogs, as if there really are but anyways, I would just like to post it here because I read my blogs and go back to my entries every now and then.

CURE FROM THE CUPBOARD written by Elsie Kalaw Santos

ü      Apply the juice of malunggay leaves on infected wounds. The author relates that it helped ooze out the pus from her son’s infected wound.

ü      Rub fresh oregano leaves on insect bites. Rub the leaves until the reddish mound on the skin disappears.

ü      Rub aloe vera on burns. However, wash off the aloe vera after 20 minutes of application because it has been found to be carcinogenic, but the author says that she’s not sure where she got the information.

ü       Drink plenty of water with sugar and salt during bout of diarrhea. The right mix is for every standard size of glass, put one teaspoon of sugar and a pinch of salt. This mixture restores the body’s electrolyte balance and replaces lost fluids.

ü      Drink a strong brew of ginger tea to soothe sore throat/coughs. But personally, I prefer to put a dice of ginger into my mouth and let it stay there just like having a candy.

ü      Take a spoonful of oregano juice three times a day. This is effective remedy for coughs because of its antibiotic properties. Squeeze out the juice of steamed fresh oregano leaves onto a tablespoon.

ü      Take chicken broth to relieve cold.

ü      Replace commercial cough syrups with SLK (sampalok-luya-kalamansi) or tamarind-ginger-calamansi. This boiled young leaves of tamarind, ginger and calamansi.

ü      Hot tea is also a soothing liquid for those with cough and or cold. To make it more soothing, add a tablespoon of honey or a tablespoon of Vitamin C fortified orange juice.
